The first generation Google Chromecast is a display device, which allows people to display screens of computers or smart phones. The device itself is a very simple item with a micro-USB port, an HDMI plug and a small button on the side. User actions are limited and errors are prevented by using physical constraints into the design. I knew where to plug the device once I saw it because the HDMI plug only allows to be plugged in HDMI port. Once I plugged into the HDMI port and the USB port on both sides, there is a red light indicates that the device is on. After the device is connected to the WiFi, the light instantly turns into white. This is a simple but efficient feedback that tells the user if they are doing the right thing.

The set up of Chromecast in a smart phone is easy likewise. Instructions in the chromecast app are given step by step, which directs users what to do and prevent undesired user actions as well. The set up in a computer, however, is different from set up in a smart phone. To install the device successfully, you must using a chrome browser as a prerequisite. This limitation greatly lowers the accessibility of the device. It certainly blocked users who don't use chrome browser.

Another confusing thing that to some extent, causes user frustration is the small button on the side. When I first got the device, I thought it was a power button. But the device remained off after I presses it for many times. It was a false affordance without any reminder of what is it for. I had to look online to find out that it is actually a reset button.

Overall, I think the first generation Google Chromecast is a well-designed display device leave aside the fact that it is only for Chrome users. The simple design of the product itself and the clear instructions when setting it up prevent users from misusing it. The only thing I think need to be changed is the design of that small button. Simply put a icon or a word "reset" will help a lot.
